The importance of the rough sketch

By Shawn. Filed in Complexity, Narrative.

Last week Robyn and I were in Adelaide starting a project to help a company get a community of practice up and running. As we were talking to our client explaining our approach I was mindful of all the rough sketches of models I use to communicate ideas. With this in mind I stumbled upon this great new web service called Sketchcast which enables you to jot a sketch and provide a voice over explanation. So I thought I would give is a go and show you how I typically introduce executives on why they might want to use narrative techniques.

Very impressive, Shawn - both your cynefin example and sketchpad. I'll look into it. As you say, the practice of rough sketching to explain, discuss, develop and reach agreement is so ingrained as to be almost second nature, so anything that enhances its reach is helpful. Thanks.

Lain.-

Loved this tool - and the explanation! It was as though you were right here explaining it to me. This will so enhance virtual teaming. Out of interest was the tool time consuming and complex to use?

Me too - I'm always making sketches - thanks for sharing this great tool.

Hi Heidi, it was very easy to use. I have a Wacom tablet so I can draw a lot easier than using a mouse. The only thing I stumbled on for a little while was discovering how to draw thinner lines. Well, it turns out if you click on the colour button you can also choose the line thickness. I was a one take effort and I have purposely not reviewed it because I know I will think of things I should have said.

Looks like that Sketchcast has lots of potential. I signed up and spent quite a while trying to figure out how to draw something. I finally gave up. I could not find any intructions on their site so have written to them. I hope I hear back as I would like to use it. Thanks for telling us about it.

Hi Stephanie, maybe I can help. What problems did you have?

Posted by: Shawn at October 8, 2007 9:43 AM

Thanks Shawn. For the tool and the topic.

Thanks, Shawn. I can't figure how to start the drawing process. I can put my cursor in the box but it does not create a drawing. I guessed it must have something to do with one of those three things to the lower right but tried and tried and did not do whatever needed to be done. What does one first do?

Stephanie, did you click on the 'record' button on the right hand side? When you do this your cursor should change to a pen icon which will enable you to draw.

Okay, good. That worked. Thanks!

But my voice did not record. I think i have a fairly good internal mic on my MacBook. Any hints?

There is a check box just below the title of the sketch you need to check to get the sound to record. I'm also on a Mac so should work OK.

Hi Shaun,
I tried to review your very nice sketch on how to introduce Cynefin concept, but alas, it seems to have disappeared from your archives - or am I looking in the wrong place?

It seems that Sketchcast has ceased to exist and along with it my sketch of Cynefin. I'm planning to do a new one as soon as this busy period is over.
