Social bookmarking

By Shawn Callahan. Follow me on Twitter. Filed in Collaboration.

One of the new practices that will be essential at a time when information volumes are exploding is social bookmarking. That's because with social bookmarking you are getting help from your colleagues, community members and practically any one else who's doing it. Problem is, it's not the easiest thing to explain. So we are lucky to have Common Craft's 3 minute video that anyone can understand.

As readers of this blog you are probably already in the know about things like social bookmarking, weblogs and wikis. So your job is to let your colleagues know about this practice so we can all benefit from people using this tool. Just forward this post to them so they can see this cool video.

This is great! An easy, quick, and visual explanation of social bookmarking on del.icio.us!

The movie is fine, but it skips what to me is the most valuable fourth step in using social bookmarks.

You perform a del.icio.us or technorati search on tags. The search has its own feed!! Add it to your aggregator/feed reader. Then anytime somebody tags something that fits your search tag logic, you are immediately notified. It's a dynamic social search.

This is a fabulous way to keep up with what is new AND relevant to others. You also benefit when others uncover or rediscover older items. If you find them valuable, you can then tag the items as your own, increasing their global relevancy.

Great point Ron. I will do this right now.

Ron, I just wanted to report that your idea has been a phenomenal breakthrough for me. I'm so many interesting things just by subscribing to the tag 'storytelling' and then subscribing to the related rss feed in bloglines. Thanks!
